It is beneficial for writers to understand phrases and clauses because then they can create proper sentances. If you can properly understand clauses then you can avoid fragmented sentence. A fragmented sentence is when you lose or don't really have a clause. It improves their sentence structure, makes their writing easier to read and look better.
