1. Yes racism does exist in Canada and In Saskatchewan. It is everywhere. I see racism in schools and in small towns the most. Racism isn't extreme in Canada but it isn't ignored either. I would say it is in between. Communities deal with racism the most but it isn't a serious issue, it is more of a joke.

2. Yes I think humor is a good way to deal with racism. First nations people deal with tragedy through humor. It takes the pain away and helps them feel better about the situation making them laugh about it instead of cry. When non-first nations people use humorous racism, first nations can take it as offensive because they are not from their culture making them think it is degrading and hurtful. Humor is transforming. It can take you to a place, good or bad.

3. One joke I heard from the movie was "When white people hear a siren, they automatically think something bad has happened. When first nations hear a siren, they say "Hey, your ride is here". "

Where the World Began

1. The two descriptor pairs are jubilation and mourning. The tone on the opening paragraph is scary and depressing.

2. The prairie towns are described to be dull, bleak, flat and uninteresting. She doesn't agree because there are not always bad things about small prairie towns, there are also good things. I agree with her because growing up in small prairie towns you get to know everyone and become close with your surroundings.

3. She didn't like the weather and how small her town was. She also didn't like how there were no stores and the atmosphere is too busy. People like to stick their noses in other peoples business.

4. I feel the same way she does because there is not a whole lot to do around here. You can go to the Red Bull for a bite to eat and to rent a movie but that is about it. Our pool has been demolished for quite some time now so we can not go swimming. I am glad that we do have a store even though you can't always get what you need there.

5. I believe Canadians are not too modest especially when compared to Americans. We are not big talkers like the Americans. We keep to ourselves more.



6. I think that the quote means Canadians seem to be not as tough as other people think we are. I disagree because most Canadians are hard workers and we do not complain about our harsh winters. We still do out in severe weather conditions and get our chores done and move on with our lives.


7. I agree with this theme because it suits the poem pretty well. It means you are always going to be apart of your cultural roots no matter where you are from.

Why is it beneficial for writers to be able to identify different sentence structures, understand the difference between sentence structures, and be able to use different sentence structures?

It is beneficial for writers to be able to identify different sentence structures because it helps them make more interesting sentences that keep the audience interested. Sentence structures make writers realize they can become better writers and make it so there are not as many run on sentences. You could also make sure there are different lengths to your sentences. Being able to use different sentence structures enables you to know when to use independent and dependent clauses.

Strange Brew

Strange Brew is all about Canadian stereotypes. Bob and Doug McKenzie are constantly drinking beer and always have flannel shirts on, big winter jackets and toques. They also wore hockey jerseys and played a lot of hockey. I agree that Canadians drink a lot of beer because we love our beer! We enjoy sitting by the fire with a beer in our hands and going to craven knowing we will encounter lots of beer! We wear flannel shirts because we like wearing them and most people do. Wearing big winter coats are necessary when it is winter time. We would freeze without them but we do not wear them year long. Us Canadians have to wear toques to keep our heads warm or else we would freeze our ears off because our winters are so harsh. Their favourite words to say are "eh"and "hoseheads" or "hoser" I agree that most Canadian says "eh". It just comes out naturally. I don't hear most Canadians saying "hose heads" often, mostly because we aren't stuck in the 80's. I agree hockey is a major sport in Canada and is played a lot. I think it should be our national sport because we love to play and attend games regularly.

What does it mean to be Canadian?

To be Canadian means more than simply living in Canada. In Canada we stand up for what we believe in and respect others opinions. The extreme weather conditions, our ethnic cultures, our neighbourly lifestyle and our democratic government are what it means to be Canadian. We view ourselves as being hardworking individuals who like to say “eh” a lot. We can’t live without our poutine and Tim Horton’s coffee and donuts! Others view us as living in igloos, saying "eh" a lot, being overly nice, being good at hockey and mispronouncing words such as "house", or "about", which come off as "aboot, or hoose". Blizzard, storm and freezing have become a part of our daily word choice but we continue to be optimistic about the future. One thing we Canadians have in common is that we experience severe weather conditions. This makes us stronger and tougher. Canadian society is based a lot on diversity. We are full of different nationalities and encourage them to grow. We respect other cultures and their cultural beliefs because we are an accepting nation. Our personalities and values influence us greatly because they make us who we are and who we are becoming as individuals. Our values come from people around us and our families. Personalities are developed throughout the years and are influenced by our parents from what they teach us.
