1. Yes racism does exist in Canada and in Saskatchewan. I think that it exists everywhere. The racism isn't terrible here it doesn't usually go past verbal abuse but it cant be ignored. There are many misconceptions between First nation and white people. It is very hard for First Nations youth to make something of themselves because of racial stereotypes and terrible lives at home.

2. I think that dealing with racism is about the best way you Can do it. Everyone thinks its funny but when they look at it they realize how untrue it is and its just another misconception. It might even help to blur the line between first nations and white people. You have to be careful who uses humour to talk about racism, i white person cant talk about first nations because they don't really know what they go through. So they cant laugh at things they don't understand.

3.A joke from the movie was "When white people hear a siren they automatically think something bad has happened and get really concerned. But when redskins hear a siren they say hey cousin your ride is here."

Saskatchewan

Its where the horizon never ends.
The roads are straight forever.
The fields,
stretching as far as the eye can see,
like a patchwork quilt.

Its the cold winters.
The cold wind biting your face.
The drifts against the trees.
The snow days,
of snowmobiling and having snowball fights

Its fishing
and swimming
and exploring the bush.

Its the hot summers.

The hope for rain,

1 I think that the poets description of Canada's regions are appropriate. He does a very good job of making a picture in your head. He has very accurate descriptions of each region and what kind of geography they have.
2 Yes the poet is concerned about the different Canadian landscapes. He compares and contrasts them. It shows that he is talking about the different landscapes and geography. He uses the contrasts to show the different regions so he can describe them in detail.
3 He talks about the east and west the land and the water
4 The poet missed all of northern Canada and some of Ontario and Quebec. He doesn't describe any of it.

1 A place of Jubilation and mourning, horrible and beautiful.

2 Other people describe them as dull, black, flat and uniteresting she doesnt agree
she thinks there are good and bad things about a small town. Either way they are a part of her history.

4 Yes i cant wait to leave my town. Its not that i dont like it but ther is nothing to do. Cities ther is something going on, the biggest store is weiners and our pool is now a big hole in the ground

5 I think that Canadians are to modest. They dont brag about all of their great accomplishments. The only time we showed lots of patrism was during the winter olympics. Usually we just go by in life being polite and saying sorry all the time.

6 I think that she means every canadian is just a wannabe pioneer. We pretend that we are tough and know the land but according to here we dont. I dont agree with this at all half us are city people who couldnt survive outside of it. Te other half are rough and tough farm kids. I dont think we are phony pioneers we live off the land just like they did.

7 It captures the idea of the poem really good. Its a long theme but its good for the peom. She means that that no matter where you are from you will always be part of your roots.

Partenered Poetry Analysis

1a) I don’t really see how the first poem is supposed to represent a vast and varied land, but it is definitely the best of the poems.

1b) This poem does seem vast indeed. However, it seems to be almost entirely composed of trees with little variety at all except occasional small comments on the sky.

1c) This poem is rather morbid, it’s all about one thing: killing and maiming animals. Then at the end she uses this as an analogy to dog-eat-dog city life.

2a) Yeah, the author is obviously a big-time tree hugger, it seems his entire life revolves around the Canadian lands.

2b) The poet who wrote the second poem is extremely obsessed with trees. He also has respect for the weather. His love for the land seems to be almost a story of romance.

2c) I can’t decide whether the author of this poem is compassionate or heartless. At first she seems to feel love and care for the animals, but then it seems that the childhood experiences toughened and hardened her towards the needs of those who are weaker.

Strange Brew

Strange brew is a movie dealing with all the Canadian stereotypes. They drink lots of beer and can never have enough. I agree that Canadians do drink a lot of beer especially in rural areas. Beer goes hand in hand with hockey. Most people will sit around a fire or fish and have some beers. In every scene they had a toque. We have to wear toques its cold out! So I also agree with this one, how else are we going to keep our heads warm. They always have hockey jerseys and they played hockey. Even though hockey is not Canada’s national sport it is what almost every Canadian does in the winter. You can’t take offence to something we are good at and very proud of. Bob and Doug say “eh” and “hoser” or “hosehead” all they time. Some of us do say “eh” and I have heard one person say “hosehead so again if we do it can’t really get mad about it. They are always wearing flannel shirts and everyone around them does. We wear flannel shirts, doesn’t bother me if the world thinks everyone does. In the movie everyone wear parkas. Winter is cold, we need parkas but we do have other more modern names for them.

Canadian and American Portrayals

Canadians are portrayed as hockey loving, beer chugging rednecks. They are polite but anger very quickly when you don't like their beer. They all have missing teeth wear flannel shirts and hockey jerseys with a beaver on the front. There s long winters, maple syrup and Zamboni driving around everywhere. We are to nice for our own good and must be planning world domination or something. Everyone has a touque on their head, snowshoes and carry skis. We walk through the city with a conoe on our back.

The Americans are portrayed as angry war loving phsyco's. they love money and are in economic despair because they don't have a war to fight. They are looking for a fight and see the Canadians as a easy target. They are portrayed as ignorant to all other cultures. The president is an idoit and the country is really led by his advisors.

Almost all of the portrayals are accurate. In most cases they arnt wide spread and some are a little exaggerated. Most canadians and Americans don't act like their stereotypes but some do. You can always find somebody who fits there stereotype. The American do seem to love war and they are the melting pot of the world. Canadians do drink a lot of beer and love their hockey. Ya lots of these do happen in other movies. They are stereotypes so they are going to show up in other movies. strange brew had a lot of the same stereotypes.

Identity,Diversity, Personalities and Values

What it means to be Canadian. It means freezing your toes playing hockey. We love Tim Horton’s and can’t live without poutine. We are patriotic people but are Humble about being Canadian. We see ourselves as happy welcoming people. We are known around the world for our kindness and generosity. We’re hardworking slightly redneck people, it doesn’t take much to make most of us happy. Others view Canadians as a very welcoming country. We are all rednecks that live in igloos, drink beer and say “eh” at the end of every sentence. Canada is known as the mosaic of races, diversity is a part of Canada. Immigrants make up part of Canada and their different cultures are respected and encouraged to flourish. Canadians have excellent personality’s and it reflects on our Identity. Our values come from our parents and we are taught what the society accepts as good values. Our personalities come from our experiences in life our parents and the people around us.
